Panerai: A Brief History of the Italian Watch Manufacturer
Posted by admin on March 11th, 2010 filed in UncategorizedAlthough Panerai watches are largely manufactured in Switzerland these days it is originally an Italian brand and still has a distinct style and look to it’s line of timepieces that is unmistakable. The company was founded in Florence by Giovanni Panerai around 1860 and became the official supplier of chronometers to the Italian Navy. Post World War II the brand fell into relative obscurity until it was oddly rescued by none other than the American action film star Sylvester Stallone.
The story is that Stallone was browsing through a Rome jewelry store just prior to filming the movie “Daylight” and randomly came across a Panerai watch. He instantly loved the unique look of the timepiece and not only wore it in the film but also had a run of signature models produced which he gave as gifts to friends and business associates. The sudden raising of the brand’s profile in this way had a lasting effect (and spawned an industry of Panerai replica watches) and the Officine Panerai company is now one of the most popular and stylish brands of wristwatch.
One of the ways Panerai has capitalized on their rediscovered popularity is to deliberately offer many short-run limited edition timepieces, never quite meeting market demand and cementing the collectability and long-term value of their products. This is one of the reasons Panerai replica watches have becoming increasingly popular. In recent years Panerai has even signed with Ferrari, the famous Italian sport and racing car manufacturer, to produce their branded line of timepieces.
Panerai is also non-tradition in their maintenance of a very small product line, with only two major styles in their standard offering, the “Historic” and “Contemporary” lines, both available in a few variations of “Luminor” or “Radiomir”. They also offer a line of specialty chronometers as well as frequent (and always unique) special editions.
